Pastor Curtis L. Johnson was born in Greenville, South Carolina to Dea. William & Mother Sadie Johnson. He is a graduate of J.L. Mann High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years. Pastor Johnson earned his Master of Divinity Degree from the M. Christopher White School of Divinity at Gardner-Webb University.
Pastor Johnson has served as Senior Pastor of the Valley Brook Outreach Baptist Church since 1993. The ministry has grown 10-fold under his leadership.
Pastor Johnson was nominated as one of the "Outstanding Young Men of America". His academic performance earned him recognition on the "National Dean's List". He is listed in Dunn and Bradstreet's National Registry of "Who's Who among Executives and Businesses."
Pastor Johnson is the Founder and Chairman of the MLK Dream Weekend, which is the community-wide celebration for Upstate, SC in honor of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday. This multi-event effort over the past 9 years includes a Diversity Luncheon, several community service projects, and personal development programs. Since its inception, there have been over 15,000 participants, over $250,000 in scholarships contributed, and many persons including youth and organizations have been recognized for their unique contributions to fulfilling the legacy of Dr. King.
Pastor Johnson is the organizer of the Upstate Live In Peace Movement, which was birthed from the Greenville Alliance for Change initiative & 107.3 JAMZ to address violence in our community. Working in collaboration of the Birmingham Movement of 100 Days of Nonviolence with Councilman Jay Roberson, that effectively reduced teen violence. Since it's inception, the Upstate has seen an approximately 20% reduction of violence. The movement is currently working within schools & with the youth and adults in the community to improve the quality of life in the Upstate.
Pastor Johnson is the Gospel Director of 107.3 JAMZ, WJMZ in Greenville. His show is broadcast Sundays 7am-1pm and Monday-Friday 4-6am, where his nuggets of wisdom are an inspiration to many.
Pastor Johnson's vision is to build lives, relationships, and communities through the message and ministry of the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ. To bring this vision into fruition, the church's next building project will be the IMPACT Center, which will be the conduit for many spiritual and community based outreach efforts. He has a very expansive spiritual-based outreach and economic empowerment approach to ministry that is sure to powerfully impact and radically transform many communities in the region.
Pastor Johnson is a board member of SHARE, whose primary catalytic mission is to make the entire community more responsive to the needs and aspirations of the poor by mobilizing all available resources toward the goal of human advancement, of assisting low-income citizens break the cycle of poverty and become self-sufficient. He is the Co-Founder of Catalyst for Change, which implements strategies for quality of life improvements across Greenville County. He also serves with the Greenville Health System Diversity Advisory Council, Greenville Technical College Diversity Advisory Board, Pastor's United for Action, Greenville Alliance for Change, a member of the Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship and a member of the Baptist Minister's Fellowship of Greenville & Vicinity.
