About Pastor Johnson
Pastor Curtis L. Johnson, a native of Greenville, South Carolina, was born to Deacon William & Mrs. Sadie Johnson. He is a graduate of J.L. Mann High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Air Force where he served for four years. While in the Air Force, Pastor Johnson felt the call to come home to help his grandfather, the Rev. A. B. Sherman, build Valley Brook Outreach Baptist Church.
Pastor Johnson preached his initial sermon in August of 1990 and became the Senior Pastor of Valley Brook in May of 1993. Under his visionary and creative leadership, the church has activated over 40 active ministries designed to meet practical, spiritual, relational, and economic needs.
In a continued effort to build, Pastor Johnson is the Founder of the MLK Dream Weekend – a community-wide celebration of events representing Dr. Martin Luther King’s theme’s of diversity and empowerment that will represent Greenville as a diverse county. Profit from the weekend will be utilized for scholarships and empowerment for the underserved. As a member of the NAACP, he is actively involved in community efforts to being about a positive change through racial reconciliation and empowerment projects.
Furthering his service to the community, Pastor Johnson is the gospel director of the #1 rated radio show in the Upstate, “Gospel JAMZ” on 107.3 JAMZ. His shows are broadcast Sundays, 7am-1pm and Monday – Friday, 4am-6am, where his nuggets of wisdom are an inspiration to many.
Pastor Johnson has studied at Morris College School of Religion extension program, the American Baptist Theological Seminary extension program, North Greenville College, and Greenville Technical College. He is currently a student at Gardner-Webb University in the M. Christopher White Divinity School Master of Divinity Program.
He has been nominated as one of the “Outstanding Young Men of America”. His academic performance earned him recognition on the “National Dean’s List”. He is listed in the three editions of Dunn and Bradstreet’s National Registry of “Who’s Who among Executives and Businesses.”
His vision is to build lives, relationships, and communities through the message and ministry of the Kingdom of God in Jesus Christ. To bring this vision into fruition, he has completed the first phase, the 850+ seat Rev. A.B. Sherman Ministry Center, which is the conduit for many outreach efforts. To expand the vision, a 2500 seat Cathedral and an offsite Empowerment Center are among the plans for the second phase. He has a very expansive spiritual-based outreach and economic empowerment approach to ministry that is sure to powerfully impact and radically transform many communities in the region.
Through his preaching and teaching, God has used Pastor Johnson to affect the lives of many churches, pastors, men, women, and youth. He and his wife, First Lady Charla Johnson, partner together to build lives and relationships for the Kingdom of God. They have two sons, Isaiah & Joshua.
